BLACKHALL crashed to their first defeat of the season after a limp batting performance at Marton.
Hall restricted the home side to 170 for 3, which looked about a par score on a pitch which offered reasonable assistance to the bowlers.
But Hall never really recovered from an awful start in their run chase, being restricted to 27 for 4 in the 11th over.
Excellent repair work by skipper Darren Hickey and Tony Booth steadied the ship and even put the Collierymen in a decent position to go on and win the game, with 100 needed from 20 overs.
But all that good work was wasted by Hickey, when he needlessly charged down the wicket at Ben Hutchinson and was easily stumped.
An all-too-familiar collapse then ensued and Hall were all out for 95 with plenty of overs to spare.
Only Booth could hold his head up high after compiling a gritty 48, while South African professional Warren Swan was desperately unlucky to be undone by a ‘guzunder’ ball – a delivery which keeps so low, it goes under the bat.
And Masood Mirza can consider himself a shade unfortunate to be given out leg before after getting a good stride down the track.
When Marton batted first, they found runs hard to come by after a good opening spell by Luke Cushlow and the spin combination of Swan and Mirza.
Martin Hood was first to go for 27, excellently caught and bowled by Mirza.
Chris Lane was then run out for 32 as the run rate started to stutter.
But some good late-order hitting from Mohammed Zahid and Graham Shaw meant Marton had posted a challenging total, which ultimately proved beyond Hall’s capabilities.
MARTON: M Hood c and b Mirza 27, C Lane run out 32, M Croft c Mirza b Swan 33, C Veazey c Swan b Mirza 25, M Zahid b Swan 16, G Shaw not out 19, D Kitching run out 5, A Wardell lbw Swan 0, Z Shabaz not out 11. Extras 3, Total 170 for 7.
Bowling: J Ward 3-0-12-0, L Cushlow 7-1-18-0, M Mirza 22-2-68-2, WC Swan 18-2-72-3.
BLACKHALL: WC Swan lbw Shabaz 7, JI Darby b Shabaz 1, M Mirza lbw Zahid 0, A Booth b Hutchinson 48, O Gwyn lbw Zahid 1, DJ Hickey st Veazey b Hutchinson 16, P Bell b Hutchinson 0, A Darby st Veazey b Zahid 2, C Brown c Kitching b Zahid 0, J Ward c Croft b Zahid 12, L Cushlow not out 0. Extras 6, Total 95 all out.
Bowling: Z Shabaz 6-2-20-2, M Zahid 19.5-6-33-5, M Croft 9-1-22-0, B Hutchinson 6-0-17-3.
Marton (20 points) beat Blackhall (three) by 75 runs. _________________ "Just a moment - will you shut the f*** up, I'm on the phone - sorry about that." |
