BLACKHALL are still searching for their first win of the campaign after being involved in a thrilling game at Northallerton.
The home side were just four runs short of victory when time was called and Hall are now third from bottom of the NYSD Premier Division, after bottom side Redcar thrashed Billingham Synthonia.
The next three games are crucial for the Collierymen, with games against Synners, Great Ayton and Redcar to follow – and they will be keen to increase the 33-point gap between themselves and Redcar.
Hall were indebted to a brilliant knock of 65 from skipper Darren Hickey at the weekend, an innings full of grit, determination and skill on a tricky surface.
South African professional Warren Swan had earlier battled to 22 before he was caught off the bowling of former West Hartlepool rugby star Liam Botham.
John Darby was also dismissed by Botham as the home side held all the aces early doors.
But thanks mainly to Hickey, the visitors managed to wrack up a highly-respectable 175 for 7 and gave their bowlers something to defend.
In reply, the North Yorkshire side wobbled as Jack Ward removed Ian Place and the mercurial Masood Mirza claimed the scalps of John Shanks and Botham.
If one man was going to win the game for the hosts it was John Barnes – who had earlier claimed 4-52 – and he looked set to lead Northallerton to victory until Ward returned to the attack and cleaned him up for 54.
Magic man Mirza went on to bag another five-wicket haul as time ran out and Northallerton were just four runs short and Hall two wickets shy of the victory, in a great game of cricket.
This weekend sees a double programme of matches, with Hall at home to newly-promoted Billingham Synthonia on Saturday and then facing a trip to former champions Great Ayton the following day.
